For any new mother, self-care must be her top priority. I
have heard many objections to this, as most mother's say that the welfare of
the child comes first. But, think of it
this way: If you are not at your best then how can you be the best for your
child?
I'm sure you know why you are told by the airline attendant
to put your oxygen mask on first and then assist your child. It is the same
thing here.
A NEW MOTHER'S SELF-CARE PRIORITY LIST:
- REST
- PROPER NUTRITION
- EXERCISE
- VITAMIN D in the Winter & FRESH AIR ALL YEAR
- RESPITE AND SUPPORT IS # 1 on the list for PPMD Moms.
For mom's that are not suffering from PPMD,
I would place it at # 4. It is still necessary! You need extra arms to hold the
baby to give you a break. These arms can also help you clean, make you food,
let you rest, or even go out for a coffee break with a friend. This means even AFTER the two weeks your
husband or spouse may get off after your child is born. It is surprising to
know that there are a lot of new Mother's who don't have anyone to help out. It
may be also surprising to know that almost ALL new moms think it is NORMAL to
do it alone.
So, take care of yourself first. You are important. You are
valued and loved.
